On June 30, 2026, Mayor Dan Ruimy and A Better Maple Ridge Councillors Korleen Carreras and Onyeka Dozie, together with Councillor Judy Dueck, approved the Recreation Ready funding strategy.

are asking you to vote on borrowing $227 million dollars for up to 25 years
to finance construction of a new aquatics and rec centre in Hammond.
Built in 1981, the pool at the Leisure Centre at Haney Place is operating beyond capacity, with waitlists for swimming lessons and other popular programs. The bigger issue is not capacity; it is the serviceable lifespan.
The issue is not whether Maple Ridge needs a new pool. It does.
The question is whether Hammond is the best location.
Since elected the Mayor and Council have repeatedly made statements supporting expanding the downtown area which is why council lobbied for years with TransLink to make Haney Place the main transportation hub in the city.
The Mayor say’s Downtown is the heart of our community.

There is another way.
I am voting NO to taking on this loan to build a new pool in Hammond and saying YES to partnering with developers to fund all or part of the cost of building a new pool and recreation centre downtown at Haney Place Mall.
Cities across North America are partnering with developers to undertake major projects and create modern, vibrant city centres.
Just twenty minutes away, near the Port Mann Bridge, Coquitlam has partnered with developers to build a new waterfront community that we could only dreamed of due to past council and current council’s poor decisions.
At this site, the developer is building a new aquatic and community centre that will ultimately be owned and operated by the city.

The vision is to revitalize the city center by partnering with the Haney Place Mall owners to develop the mall site.
CORE IDEA
The mall owner and their developer build and pay for the construction of a new Aquatics Centre on the east end of the mall in exchange for city considerations on zoning for a new mall with tower, with options to build a smaller tower on the site of the current pool on the north-west corner of the mall once the new pool opens.

Direct walking route across the mall; shared parking; short link to transit; public square tied to the civic precinct; steady foot traffic for downtown businesses.
